What the numbers don't show

These are the two fuel cards at the top of our fuel list, and the first question is not which card is better but which pump is near you: IndianOil RBL XTRA earns its 15 Fuel Points per ₹100 only at IndianOil outlets (RBL T&C, up to 2,000 points a month), and BPCL SBI Octane earns 25 points per ₹100 only at BPCL pumps (up to 2,500 points a month, SBI T&C). At other pumps XTRA earns 2 points per ₹100 and Octane nothing. Both then add a 1% fuel surcharge waiver, which RBL caps at ₹200 a month on transactions of ₹500 to ₹4,000; our data has SBI's at ₹100 a month, a figure that is not in a document we could re-read.

On the numbers, XTRA is ahead per rupee of fuel if you redeem the way the T&C price its points. RBL states 1 Fuel Point = ₹0.50 on IOCL pumps (3 Fuel Points convert to 5 XTRA Reward Points, each worth ₹0.30 at the pump), so 15 points per ₹100 is 7.5%; SBI prices Octane points at ₹0.25 (1 point = ₹0.25), so 25 points per ₹100 is 6.25%. The ceilings differ too: XTRA's 2,000 points is ₹1,000 a month, reached at about ₹13,300 of IndianOil fuel; Octane's 2,500 points is ₹625 a month, reached at ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel. At ₹6,000 a month at the right pump that is ₹450 on XTRA against ₹375 on Octane, and at ₹13,300 or more XTRA earns ₹1,000 against ₹625, ₹4,500 a year more. The XTRA figure holds only if you redeem at IndianOil pumps: RBL's FAQ prices a point at ₹0.10 elsewhere, which would cut the return to 1.5%. The profile table above assumes 40% of fuel spend at IndianOil for XTRA and 50% at BPCL for Octane (our assumptions, noted on each card page), which is why the two trade places from profile to profile.

Everything that is not fuel favours Octane. It pays 10X (about 2.5%) on dining, groceries, department stores and movies up to 7,500 points a month (the category list varies between SBI sources, per our data), 1 point per ₹100 on other retail spend, gives four domestic lounge visits a year (one a quarter, SBI's lounge list from 10 January 2026), a ₹2,000 e-gift voucher at ₹3 lakh of spend and 6,000 bonus points (₹1,500) for paying the annual fee. XTRA pays a flat 2 points per ₹100 on other purchases, has no lounge access, and its milestone is 1,000 points a quarter on ₹75,000 of spend; utilities, insurance, railways, rent and wallet loads earn nothing on it, and SBI also excludes rent and wallet loads from Octane.

Fees and confidence. XTRA costs ₹1,500 a year, waived at ₹2.75 lakh of eligible spend; Octane costs ₹1,499, waived at ₹2 lakh. A driver who spends ₹10,000 a month on fuel clears neither waiver on fuel alone (₹1.2 lakh a year), so the fee is a real cost for both unless the rest of your card spend goes on the card; on XTRA's ₹2.75 lakh threshold that means about ₹23,000 a month. Our XTRA data rests on the RBL T&C and FAQ and is high confidence; Octane is medium because its eligibility and some caps are unconfirmed. Both cards' T&C can change, so read the current versions before applying.

Figures from the issuers' own T&C/MITC as recorded on each card page (checked 30 Oct 2026); sources are listed on BPCL SBI Card OCTANE and IndianOil RBL Bank XTRA Credit Card. Estimates, not offers: terms change, so confirm with the issuer.
