What the numbers don't show

These are two tiers of the same Swiggy HDFC family. Per the HDFC combined T&C (4 March 2026): BLCK costs ₹1,000 a year (waived at ₹2 lakh spend) and pays 10% on Swiggy food ordering, Instamart and Dineout up to ₹1,500 cashback per billing cycle; ORNGE costs ₹500 (waived at ₹1.5 lakh) and pays 5% on the same Swiggy spends. Both pay 5% on Amazon and Flipkart and at a list of other merchants and categories (apparel, pharmacy, Nykaa, Ajio, Netflix, Hotstar, BookMyShow and others) and 1% on everything else, with fuel, rent, education, gaming and wallet loads excluded.

Worked example: the extra 5% on Swiggy is worth ₹50 for every ₹1,000 spent there. At ₹3,000 a month on Swiggy that is ₹150 a month, ₹1,800 a year, comfortably above the ₹500 higher fee, so BLCK wins. At ₹1,000 a month the extra is ₹600 a year, only ₹100 more than the fee difference, so it is close. Below about ₹830 a month of Swiggy spend (₹500 ÷ ₹50 per ₹1,000 = ₹10,000 a year, so ₹833 a month), ORNGE is cheaper overall, unless your total card spend reaches ₹2 lakh a year, when the BLCK fee is waived and it wins at any Swiggy spend.

Both share one ₹1,500 monthly cashback pool for the 5% merchants (as we read the T&C table; the BLCK 10% Swiggy tier has its own ₹1,500 cap), and both have a minimum transaction of ₹249 on Swiggy and ₹100 elsewhere. Neither lists lounge access. BLCK waives its first-year joining fee on ₹75,000 of spend within 90 days.

The fee break-even moves with your total spend. The ₹833-a-month figure above applies when neither fee is waived, that is below ₹1.5 lakh of card spend a year. Between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹2 lakh ORNGE is free and BLCK is not, so BLCK's extra 5% on Swiggy has to cover the whole ₹1,000 fee: ₹1,000 ÷ 5% = ₹20,000 a year, about ₹1,667 a month on Swiggy. Above ₹2 lakh both fees are waived and BLCK is better at any Swiggy spend. That middle band is where most light and first-time cardholders sit, which is why our first-card list shows BLCK only narrowly ahead and only on an assumed 40% Swiggy share.

The ceiling on BLCK's advantage. BLCK's 10% stops at ₹1,500 of cashback a billing cycle, which is ₹15,000 of Swiggy spend; ORNGE's 5% reaches the same ₹1,500 at ₹30,000. The gap between them therefore peaks at ₹750 a month (₹9,000 a year) when you spend about ₹15,000 a month on Swiggy, and disappears above ₹30,000, where both are held to ₹1,500 and the choice comes down to the fee. The T&C table prints the ₹1,500 cap against the Swiggy row and leaves it blank for the online-merchants row, so it is not clear whether the online 5% shares that pool; our rankings assume one shared pool, the cautious reading.

Eligibility and what we could not confirm. HDFC states a net monthly income above ₹20,000 for salaried ORNGE applicants (or ITR above ₹6 lakh if self-employed). We did not find a stated income criterion for BLCK on the page text we retrieved, so confirm it on HDFC's application page before applying. One more discrepancy: HDFC's migration FAQ (30 September 2026) calls ORNGE "a life time free credit card" for holders moved over from the old Swiggy HDFC card, while ORNGE's own T&C shows a ₹500 fee waived at ₹1.5 lakh, so migrated holders may not pay the fee and new applicants should use the T&C figure.

Figures from the issuers' own T&C/MITC as recorded on each card page (checked 30 Oct 2026); sources are listed on Swiggy BLCK HDFC Bank and Swiggy Ornge HDFC Bank. Estimates, not offers: terms change, so confirm with the issuer.
