RuPay credit cards on UPI: how it works and what to check
Updated 30 Oct 2026 · by SwipeWise editorial team · how we write
Linking a RuPay credit card to a UPI app lets you pay a QR code or UPI ID and have the amount charged to the card instead of your bank account. Whether that is worth doing depends less on the linking than on how your card’s issuer treats UPI spend for rewards.
What the regulator said
In its Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies of 8 June 2022, RBI proposed allowing credit cards to be linked to UPI and said “To start with Rupay credit cards will be enabled with this facility”. It added that the facility would be available after the required system development was complete, and that necessary instructions would be issued to NPCI separately. That is the regulatory origin of the feature.
The operating rules sit with NPCI. We could not open NPCI’s circulars or FAQ pages (they refused our requests), so we do not quote them. The operating details below come from the issuers’ own published terms (Kotak Mahindra Bank’s FAQ and the HDFC Bank PIXEL Play terms), which say several of these lists are governed by NPCI. Treat them as issuer descriptions and check your own issuer.
How it works in practice
Kotak Mahindra Bank’s RuPay credit card FAQ (undated; accessed 2026-10-30) says:
- You link the card in a UPI app, and a separate UPI PIN is set for it, different from the card PIN.
- Only payments to merchants are allowed. Payments to a person or to another credit card are not, and funds cannot be received on the card.
- Restricted categories include person-to-person, person-to-merchant (P2PM), digital account opening, lending platforms, cash withdrawal at merchants or ATMs, ERUPI, IPOs, foreign inward remittances and mutual funds, “and any other categories which are restricted by Kotak Mahindra Bank”.
- The daily limit per card equals the UPI limit (₹1 lakh, ₹2 lakh in some special cases), subject to the available credit limit. In the first 24 hours after linking it is ₹5,000.
- There is no charge to the customer for linking or transacting.
- UPI spends earn reward points, excluding categories as per the card’s terms.
- UPI is not available on add-on RuPay cards.
- Only RuPay credit cards can be linked (“currently”). We have not checked whether this has since changed.
- A renewed or replaced card must be registered again in UPI.
- UPI transactions show in the Kotak mobile app and the monthly card statement.
HDFC Bank’s PIXEL Play terms (updated 30 Jul 2026) list the same restricted categories and the same ₹1 lakh, ₹2 lakh and ₹5,000 limits. Other issuers may differ on limits, categories and add-ons, so use this as a list of questions to ask, not as a statement of current rules.
Reward rules decide the value
UPI spend can earn at the normal rate, a reduced rate, or nothing, depending on the card. From the issuers’ terms, for ₹10,000 of UPI spend in a month:
| Card (RuPay variant) | What UPI earns | ₹10,000 spend |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC PIXEL Play | 1% cashback as CashPoints on UPI spends on the RuPay variant, capped at 500 CashPoints a month; none on transactions below ₹100; 1 CashPoint = Re 1 on redemption to PayZapp | 1% x ₹10,000 = 100 CashPoints = ₹100; the cap is reached at ₹50,000 |
| Tata Neu Plus HDFC Bank | 1% NeuCoins on UPI spends on the RuPay variant: 0.25% on any UPI ID plus 0.75% extra if paid with the Tata Neu UPI ID; capped at 500 NeuCoins a month. UPI does not qualify for the 2% on Tata brands | 100 NeuCoins (25 + 75) |
| IndianOil HDFC Bank | 1 Fuel Point per ₹150 on UPI spends on the RuPay variant (minimum ₹150 per transaction) | ₹10,000 / ₹150 = about 66 points. Worth ₹0.96 each as IndianOil fuel (about ₹64; minimum redemption 500 points) or Re 0.20 each as statement credit (about ₹13; minimum 12,500 points and a ₹50 fee) |
| Kiwi RuPay | For cards issued since 4 Jul 2024 without Kiwi Neon: 1.5% (6 Kiwis per ₹100) on Scan & Pay in the Kiwi app, 0.5% on online payments; Kiwis are awarded in multiples of ₹100 and capped monthly at 1% of the credit limit; 1 Kiwi = ₹0.25 | 6 x 100 = 600 Kiwis = ₹150; redemption needs at least 500 Kiwis, in multiples of 500 |
| Jupiter Edge+ | Jewels only on UPI payments made through the Jupiter UPI app; other UPI apps do not qualify. The rate table lists 5 Jewels per ₹100 for “Others”. 1 Jewel = Re 0.20 for Jupiter Flights, Store, vouchers or gold, and Re 0.14 for statement credit or bill payments | 500 Jewels = ₹100 at Re 0.20, or ₹70 at Re 0.14 |
Older Kiwi cards earn 1% on Scan & Pay, and Kiwi Neon members follow a separate scheme, so check which applies to you. The Jupiter T&C also carries other rate statements elsewhere in the document (for example 10% Jewels on UPI spends and a flat 2%), so confirm the current rate in the app before relying on the 5% figure.
The same ₹10,000 gives about ₹13 to ₹150 in these rows, depending on the card and, for IndianOil HDFC Bank, on how you redeem. The Kiwi and Jupiter rows show how the app you pay with can decide whether you earn at all.
Fee-waiver targets are separate. HDFC PIXEL Play’s ₹500 fee is waived at ₹1 lakh of spend in the year, and its MITC lists only cash withdrawal as excluded from the spend counted. Whether UPI spend is counted is not spelled out there, so ask the issuer; see annual fee waiver guide.
Which cards in our data are RuPay
In our data, Kiwi RuPay and Jupiter Edge+ are RuPay only. HDFC PIXEL Play, IndianOil HDFC Bank and Tata Neu Plus HDFC Bank are listed as Visa and RuPay, and HDFC’s terms say the UPI benefit applies only to the RuPay variant, so check which variant you are being issued. Our RuPay cards ranked by rewards list shows every card whose network includes RuPay, ranked on general earn rules: it does not model a separate UPI rate, so use it to shortlist and then read each card’s UPI terms.
What to check before you link
- Whether your card variant and UPI app support credit-card linking now.
- The reward rate, cap and exclusions for UPI in the MITC or reward terms.
- Whether UPI counts toward milestones and fee waivers.
- Per-day limits, and the lower limit after first linking.
- Whether add-on cards can use UPI.
- Whether rewards depend on using a specific app, as on Kiwi and Jupiter Edge+.
A normal card swipe or online payment sometimes earns more than UPI on the same card; compare using the calculator with your own categories, and read the methodology for how we treat these cards. Terms change, so confirm the current position in your issuer’s documents.
