Annual fee waiver guide: how to avoid paying card fees
Updated 30 Oct 2026 · by SwipeWise editorial team · how we write
Many rewards cards charge an annual fee and waive it if you spend a stated amount in a year. A waiver helps only if the spend was going to happen anyway, and only if the spend you are counting is the kind the issuer counts. This guide shows how to check both, using fees and thresholds from the issuers’ own documents.
Fees and waiver thresholds on named cards
Fees are before GST, which is charged on top (18%; see GST on credit card fees and charges). Thresholds are as stated on the issuer pages, MITCs and fee schedules listed under Sources.
| Card | Annual fee | Waived at | Fee as share of waiver spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Millennia | ₹1,000 | ₹1 lakh in a year before the renewal date | 1,000 / 1,00,000 = 1.00% |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | ₹2,500 | ₹4 lakh retail spend within 12 billing cycles of the anniversary year | 2,500 / 4,00,000 = 0.63% |
| AU Zenith+ | ₹4,999 | ₹8 lakh net retail spend in the previous card anniversary year (from the 2nd year) | 4,999 / 8,00,000 = 0.62% |
| Axis Magnus | ₹12,500 | ₹25 lakh eligible spend in the preceding card anniversary year | 12,500 / 25,00,000 = 0.50% |
| Axis ACE | ₹499 (from the 2nd year) | Annual spend above ₹2 lakh | 499 / 2,00,000 = 0.25% |
| Amex Platinum Travel | ₹5,000 | No waiver stated on the issuer page | not applicable |
The last column is the fee divided by the spend needed to avoid it. It is a rough way to compare how heavy each threshold is, not a reward rate. A waiver that needs ₹8 lakh of spend to save ₹4,999 is worth chasing only if you were already near that figure.
More thresholds, from documents read on 30 October 2026
The table above has six cards. The next table adds twenty-one more whose waiver rule we read in the issuer’s own page, MITC or brochure, sorted by the spend needed. The monthly figure is the annual threshold divided by twelve, rounded.
| Card | Annual fee | Waived at | Spend a month to reach it | Fee as share of waiver spend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBI SimplyCLICK | ₹499 | ₹1 lakh in the preceding year | about ₹8,300 | 0.50% |
| SBI SimplySAVE | ₹499 | ₹1 lakh in the preceding year | about ₹8,300 | 0.50% |
| Tata Neu Plus HDFC | ₹499 | ₹1 lakh a year (HDFC MITC) | about ₹8,300 | 0.50% |
| Swiggy Ornge HDFC | ₹500 | ₹1.5 lakh in the preceding year | about ₹12,500 | 0.33% |
| ICICI Coral | ₹500 | spend over ₹1.5 lakh waives the next year’s fee | about ₹12,500 | 0.33% |
| ICICI HPCL Super Saver | ₹500 | spend over ₹1.5 lakh | about ₹12,500 | 0.33% |
| RBL ShopRite | ₹500 | ₹1.5 lakh in a membership year | about ₹12,500 | 0.33% |
| Airtel Axis Bank | ₹500 | ₹2 lakh in the preceding card anniversary year | about ₹16,700 | 0.25% |
| HSBC Live+ | ₹999 | ₹2 lakh of primary and add-on spend in the anniversary year; fee including GST fully reversed | about ₹16,700 | 0.50% |
| SBI Cashback | ₹999 | ₹2 lakh in the preceding year | about ₹16,700 | 0.50% |
| BPCL SBI Octane | ₹1,499 | ₹2 lakh of spend in the preceding year (renewal fee, from year 2) | about ₹16,700 | 0.75% |
| RBL IndianOil XTRA | ₹1,500 | ₹2.75 lakh of eligible spend (utilities, insurance, rent and similar excluded) | about ₹22,900 | 0.55% |
| ICICI MakeMyTrip | ₹999 | spend over ₹3 lakh in a year | about ₹25,000 | 0.33% |
| Tata Neu Infinity HDFC | ₹1,499 | ₹3 lakh a year (HDFC MITC) | about ₹25,000 | 0.50% |
| ICICI Rubyx | ₹2,000 | spend over ₹3 lakh waives the next year’s fee | about ₹25,000 | 0.67% |
| Flipkart Axis Bank | ₹500 | ₹3.5 lakh in the preceding card anniversary year | about ₹29,200 | 0.14% |
| ICICI Sapphiro | ₹3,500 | spend over ₹6 lakh waives the next year’s fee | about ₹50,000 | 0.58% |
| Axis Select | ₹3,000 | ₹8 lakh in the preceding anniversary year | about ₹66,700 | 0.38% |
| HSBC TravelOne | ₹4,999 | ₹8 lakh of primary-card spend in the fee year | about ₹66,700 | 0.62% |
| SBI Elite | ₹4,999 | ₹10 lakh in the preceding year | about ₹83,300 | 0.50% |
| HDFC Infinia Metal | ₹12,500 | ₹10 lakh a year, alongside a separate ₹18 lakh spend or ₹50 lakh relationship rule to keep the card (HDFC MITC v4.17) | about ₹83,300 | 1.25% |
What the numbers show. Thresholds sit at roughly 130 to 800 times the fee, so a ₹500 fee asks for ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh of spend and a ₹5,000 fee for ₹8 lakh to ₹10 lakh. The cheapest waivers relative to the fee are Flipkart Axis (₹500 on ₹3.5 lakh, 0.14%), Airtel Axis (0.25%) and the ₹500 cards at ₹1.5 lakh (0.33%); the highest are HDFC Infinia (1.25%), BPCL SBI Octane (0.75%) and ICICI Rubyx (0.67%). A low percentage is not an easy target: Flipkart Axis’s ₹3.5 lakh is about ₹29,200 a month, which only a household that routes nearly everything through the card reaches, while ₹500 on Airtel Axis needs about ₹16,700 a month. Whether a waiver is worth chasing depends on whether that spend is spend you would make on the card anyway. Rules also differ in what counts: RBL XTRA excludes categories such as utilities and insurance from the threshold, HSBC counts add-on card spend, and HDFC’s Infinia adds a second rule, ₹18 lakh of spend or ₹50 lakh with the bank, on top of the fee waiver.
The types of waiver
- Spend-based renewal waiver, as above. Some cards set a lower, earlier one: IndianOil HDFC Bank waives its ₹500 renewal fee at ₹50,000 of first-year spend, and HDFC PIXEL Play waives its ₹500 joining fee at ₹20,000 spent in the first 90 days (renewal at ₹1 lakh in the year).
- Joining-fee waiver on a first spend. Axis ACE waives its ₹499 joining fee on ₹10,000 of spend within 45 days of card set-up.
- No fee at all, as on lifetime-free cards such as Amazon Pay ICICI; see lifetime-free credit cards explained and the lifetime-free list. RBI’s credit card Master Direction says there must be no hidden charges while issuing credit cards free of charge.
- Retention or relationship waivers. These are at the issuer’s discretion; we have no standing term to quote for any card.
What counts toward the target
Issuers define eligible spend differently, and the lists differ card by card:
- Axis ACE: rent (MCC 6513) and wallet loads (MCC 6540) do not count.
- Axis Select (₹3,000 fee, waived at ₹8 lakh in a card anniversary year): insurance, rent, fuel, educational services, utilities and telecom, government services, wallet, gold and gift cards do not count.
- Axis Magnus (₹25 lakh target): Axis’s T&C revision of 20 Jun 2025 lists utilities and telecom, rent, wallet, government, insurance, gold and jewellery, fuel, cash advances and repayments as excluded from reward earn and the spend-based fee waiver. Its wording on rent is unclear (it says “capped at ₹50,000 per month”), so read the T&C for rent. Axis’s 28 Aug 2026 revision says gift card purchases do not count towards spend-based fee waiver calculations.
- HDFC cards: the fee table in HDFC’s MITC (v4.17) excludes only cash on call, balance transfer and cash withdrawal from the spend counted for waiver. For Regalia Gold, the fees page says “retail spends”. The MITC does not list rent, fuel or wallet spend as counted or not counted for the waiver, so check with the issuer before relying on them.
A quick consequence: if ₹25,000 of your monthly spend is rent, a ₹2 lakh target on Axis ACE has to be met by everything else. ₹2,00,000 / 12 = about ₹16,700 a month of eligible spend.
How the year is counted
Issuers define the year differently: the card anniversary year (Axis Magnus, AU Zenith+, Axis Select, HDFC Regalia Gold), the year before the renewal date (HDFC Millennia, HDFC PIXEL Play, Tata Neu Plus), or the first year only (IndianOil HDFC Bank). The MITC or fees page has the exact definition.
A worth-it test, with real numbers
Take Axis ACE. The annual fee of ₹499 plus 18% GST is ₹588.82 a year from the second year. Its base rate is 1.5% cashback on eligible spend (5% and 4% on a few categories, with a combined cap of ₹500 per statement, per Axis’s T&C).
- If you spend ₹2 lakh or more on eligible categories the fee is waived, and a 1.5% base earns ₹3,000 on ₹2 lakh.
- If you spend ₹1 lakh a year the fee is not waived. Cashback is ₹1,500 minus ₹588.82 = ₹911.18, or 0.91% of ₹1 lakh. The card is still positive, but the effective rate is below 1.5%.
- If you would spend an extra ₹50,000 only to move from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh, the extra spend avoids ₹588.82 of fee and earns 1.5% x ₹50,000 = ₹750 of cashback, but it is ₹50,000 you did not plan to spend. The gain exists only if the spend was real.
The effective rate is (rewards earned minus fee including GST) divided by spend. Run it for your own categories in the calculator, since caps and exclusions often make the real reward lower than the headline.
Now a case where the waiver is the wrong target. HDFC Regalia Gold’s fee is ₹2,500 plus GST, waived at ₹4 lakh. Per HDFC’s MITC, domestic lounge access from 1 Jul 2026 depends on quarterly spend; our card data records ₹60,000 a quarter, which is ₹2.4 lakh over four quarters (see airport lounge access). If you spend ₹2.4 lakh a year, reaching ₹4 lakh means ₹1.6 lakh of extra spend to save ₹2,950 including GST (2,500 x 1.18). That is 1.84% of the extra spend (2,950 / 1,60,000). It makes sense only if you would otherwise have made that spend elsewhere.
GST and the waiver
The fee tables above show fees before GST. Whether GST is also reversed when a fee is waived is not stated in the documents we read, so check your statement after a waiver. See the GST guide.
Your protections
RBI’s credit card Master Direction (para 9) requires that the annual fee and the APR be shown with equal prominence, and that changes in charges apply only prospectively with at least one month’s prior notice. If you object to a change to your disadvantage you may surrender the card without an extra charge for the closure, subject to paying dues. A closure request must be honoured within seven working days (para 8), with a ₹500-per-day penalty payable to you for delay when there is no outstanding balance. Because fee terms can change with notice, recheck them before each renewal.
Before you apply
- Joining and renewal fee, with GST, in the MITC.
- The waiver threshold and the list of excluded spend.
- How the year is counted.
- Your realistic spend on this card in eligible categories.
- Effective rate with and without the waiver.
A waiver is a bonus on spending you were going to do. This is general information, not financial advice; our methodology explains how we calculate net value. A no-fee alternative is on the lifetime-free list or the cashback list.
