How to read this ranking
A household profile (₹80,000 a month: groceries ₹15,000, utilities ₹12,000, fuel ₹8,000, the rest spread across shopping, dining and travel) rewards cards whose caps are not exhausted by the first few categories. HSBC Live+ leads (₹25,200 net, about ₹2,800 ahead of Swiggy BLCK) because its ₹1,200 monthly 10% cap is filled by ₹12,000 of the persona's ₹36,000 of groceries, dining, shopping and utilities, and the other ₹24,000 of that spend, like everything else, earns 1.5% uncapped; fuel earns nothing.
Third and fourth place, Standard Chartered Ultimate (₹5,000 fee, no waiver) and HDFC Regalia Gold, rely on a high base rate and on milestones: ₹8,000 of Regalia Gold's ₹19,280 is spend-milestone vouchers counted at half of face value. No card here earns on fuel at general pumps, and family spending often includes education and insurance, which many issuers exclude or cap (for example SBI Cashback excludes education and insurance; ICICI cards cap insurance and utilities per statement cycle). If school fees or insurance are a big share of your spend, read the exclusions on the card pages before applying.
Three costs that hit family spending and do not appear in the ranking. School and college fees paid through third-party apps carry a 1% fee at HDFC, SBI, Axis, ICICI, IDFC FIRST (minimum ₹249), Kotak, YES Bank, RBL and AU (minimum ₹99); SBI, YES Bank and RBL say payments made directly on a school or college website or at its card machine are free, so paying the school directly avoids the fee. Utility bills attract a 1% fee once a month or cycle passes a threshold that starts at ₹20,000 at IDFC FIRST, ₹25,000 at Axis and IndusInd, ₹35,000 at Kotak and ₹50,000 at HDFC, ICICI, SBI, RBL, AU and YES Bank; on this profile ₹12,000 of utilities stays below all of them. And a household that fills the tank often should check the fuel fee: ICICI charges 1% on a fuel transaction above ₹10,000, HDFC above ₹15,000 and RBL above ₹10,000 per transaction. Thresholds and the issuers that apply them are tabulated in our guide to these fees, and the fuel surcharge waiver, a separate 1% credit on small fuel purchases, in the fuel guide.
Figures come from the issuers' own terms as recorded on each card page (sources and check dates are listed there). Estimates, not offers.
